Before you start

Every router's interface looks a bit different, but the steps are nearly the same. Adapt the steps below to your own router.

Step 1 of 6

Connect to the router

Connect your computer or phone to the router's Wi-Fi or plug in an ethernet cable.

Your wireless connection will drop briefly when the password changes; a wired connection is best.

Step 2 of 6

Open the router page in your browser

Type the router address into the browser's address bar. The most common ones:

AddressCommon brands
192.168.1.1TP-Link, ZTE, Huawei
192.168.0.1D-Link, Tenda
192.168.2.1Some ISP routers

The address is also on the label under the router.

Step 3 of 6

Use the username and password from the label. On most routers the default username is admin.

If the router's admin password is still the default, change it too after this.

Step 4 of 6

Find the wireless (WLAN) settings

Open Wireless, WLAN or Wi-Fi in the menu. The password is usually under a Security sub-menu.

Step 5 of 6

Enter the new password

Choose WPA2-PSK or WPA3 and type a new password of at least 12 characters in the Password / Pre-shared key field.

See our strong password guide for help.

Step 6 of 6

Save and reconnect

Click Save / Apply. The router may restart briefly. Then reconnect your devices with the new password.

Congrats, you’re all done! 🎉

After changing the password, all your devices need to reconnect using the new password.
